Yesterday my son and I ventured down to Brisbane for multi-appointments. This was the first time it had been 3 months between appointments. On the way from the airport we dropped by Imaging Department for his booked chest x-ray. Done and then booked into Ronald McDonald House. Yes our Brisbane home, at least we know where we are going and it is within the hospital grounds, so no concern about transport either. Having caught the early flight, he went straight to bed as he had a few hours before we had to be at the first appointment.
The day went downhill from there. First Renal – results of testing done the week before – seems his kidney function had gone from 70% to 50%, Creatinine Level is 5. This doctor said that he had proved that at least the medication did work, but to stop taking it was not an option, and advised strongly to take it. Realising that he feels OK now, but he already has damage and is trying to prevent anymore. We do not want to have to go down the track of dialysis. Prevention is the best policy. I know that but my son thinks he is Superman, as he has beaten the odds.
Next appointment: Thoracic.. he saw his main managing doctor after a full breathing test. The breathing has decreased, so he was advised to go back on his Ventolin, as with it gives him a bit more lung capacity. But the crunch came that rocked him, and me. The words I had been dreading. The ANCA is active. Meaning that Wegener’s is active again. But the reading is low, but we are all aware how quick and hard it can hit. My son was all ears then, what are we going to do. He is currently well, for him, but his doctors have not made an appointment for the next followup, he has requested that he has another round of blood tests in one week, then the following week he should get the results and depending on the results, meet with his consulting team and decide what to do. In the meantime contact him if anything is not right. I will add he has starting taking his medication immediately after those appointments. (This is the nightmare I wished would never happen) Hopefully, nothing drastic happens.
We flew home today are now back home and getting back to normal. Next week I will arrange what appointments are needed. This afternoon, his car broke down. I arranged for a friends husband to tow it back to his fathers place, but as usual it will probably take money to fix. It never rains in this family – it pours!!
